IL-86

The Ilyushin Il-86 was a landmark aircraft in aviation history, holding the distinction of being the first wide-body jet airliner designed and built by the Soviet Union.

Emerging from the Ilyushin design bureau in the late 1970s, it was the Soviet answer to Western wide-bodies like the Boeing 747, McDonnell Douglas DC-10, and Lockheed L-1011 Tristar. While it superficially resembled these Western counterparts, the Il-86 was a uniquely Soviet machine, designed around specific infrastructure challenges and technological realities of the USSR. More information below.
