The Boeing 747SP (which stands for Special Performance) is a unique, shortened version of the standard Boeing 747 wide-body airliner.
Introduced in 1976, it was designed for a very specific niche: to fly ultra-long distances non-stop with a smaller passenger load than the standard 747-100 or -200. Visually, it looks like a standard 747 that has been shrunk in the wash; it is significantly shorter than a regular jumbo but features a disproportionately large tail fin.
While never a major commercial bestseller, the 747SP holds a special place in aviation history for its record-breaking range and unique engineering solutions. More information below.
