Entering commercial service in 2000 with Continental Airlines (now United), the 767-400ER was a late-stage development of the 767 program.
It was designed specifically to replace aging, fuel-thirsty, three-engine aircraft like the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and Lockheed L-1011 TriStar on heavy domestic routes and transatlantic flights.
It is important to note that this aircraft was only ever offered in the "ER" (Extended Range) configuration; there is no "standard" non-ER 767-400. More information below.
