HW B-52H Stratofortress USAF "The Devil's Own"

This model is all Metal.

Barely any other aircraft has been on duty for such a long period, and probably no other aircraft still has that much life ahead of it. Since 1955, the "Stratofortress", mostly nicknamed BUFF – Big Ugly Fat Fellow - by its crews, has seen continued service. Following current plans, the type will remain the backbone of the strategic bomber fleet through to 2040, due to its high rate of operation readiness. 60-0059 is the aircraft of the commanding officer of the 96th Bomb Squadron, the "Red Devils", based in the state of Louisiana.

In July 1978 the European manufacturer Airbus began work on their second aircraft, the A310. It would be a medium-to long-range wide-body airliner based on the Airbus larger first aircraft the A300. The first flight of the A310 took place on April 3, 1982 with the first service flight in April 1983 with Lufthansa. In 1985 the A310-300 production began as a longer range version of the A310-200 and is capable of carrying an additional 15,430 pounds of fuel in its tail-plane. The last A310 was delivered in June 1998.

Czech Airlines (CSA) operated 4 Airbus A310’s. The first to be delivered was OK-WAA c/n 564 that arrived in Prague on February 14, 1991. The first long-distance scheduled flight was made by OK-WAA March 4, 1991. Starting 2008 Czech Airlines decided to sell their aging A310s. OK-WAA served the airline until June 19, 2009 when it left Prague destined to become EP-MNX of Mahan Airlines from Tehran, Iran. Between 2008 and 2010 CSA sold all 4 A310s, 2 to Mahan, 2 to Blue Line.

Conceived as a civil airliner the Douglas DC-4 was commandeered by the U.S. Government on December 5, 1941 even before production had begun. Now known as the C-54 it had several modifications made to meet military requirements and first flew in March 1942. During WWII more than 1,200 C-54s were produced and operated in every theater of operations. The aircraft was the U.S. military workhorse carrying everything from Presidents to wounded personnel to coal. With the end of WWII more than 300 surplus C-54s were converted to commercial airline requirements.

In June 1948 access to Berlin was cut off by the Soviets. Soon it became necessary to supply Allied troops and Berlin’s two and a half million citizens with food, coal and other items by airlifts called “Operation Vittles”. The blockade ended in May 1949 with 278,000 operations recorded. USAF Lt. Gail Halvorsen gave some German children gum and started to drop gum and candy from his aircraft. It soon became known as the Berlin Candy Bomber. With the help of others a total of 23 tons of candy was dropped.

The DC-7 was the last major piston engine powered transport made by the Douglas Aircraft Company. The DC-7 was produced from 1953 to 1958 when the first jet passenger aircraft arrived on the scene. The DC-7 was the first airliner to provide non-stop service from coast to coast in America. In total there were 338 DC-7’s produced and purchased by 18 different airlines. When the jets replaced the DC-7 they found new work as cargo planes and charter work.

From 1939 until 1974 British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) was the British state airline. In 1974 BOAC merged with British European Airways Corporation to become British Airways. BOAC operated 10 DC-7C “Seven Seas” they had purchased because of the delay manufacturing the Bristol Britannia. One DC-7C was G-AOIB c/n 45112 that the airline operated from November 1956 until March 1964 when it was sold. The airframe went on to become N90802 with the tour company “Jolly Voyager” and later was converted into a water-bomber EC-888 and later EC-GGB with Basaer.

As a response to the Douglas DC-4 Lockheed developed the Constellation. As more powerful engines were developed the Constellation was stretched 21 feet and improvements made resulting in the L-1049G Super Constellation. The development of the L-1049G improved range with the addition of wing-tip tanks. The more powerful engines made it necessary to use large propellers that required the aircraft to sit quite high off the ground. A triple tail was developed because the size of a single tail would have been too large to fit in any hangar.

Northwest Airlines was founded in 1934 and in 1946 was renamed Northwest Orient Airlines. In 1953 Northwest placed an order for 6 Lockheed L-1049Gs making them the launch airline for this aircraft. The order was reduced to 4 with the first arriving in December 1954. In 1956 Douglas announced the long-range DC-7C which meant the end of the L-1049 was near. In 1958 the (4) L-1049Gs were sold to LAV (Linea Aeropostal Venezolana) with Northwest’s former N5175V c/n 4577 fleet number 175 becoming YV-C-ANE.

Pre-Production Model Shown in Image

In 1954 American Air Lines was in the market for a 75 to 100 passenger aircraft for its short to medium range domestic routes. In response Lockheed developed the low wing L-188 Electra powered by four sleek turboprops instead of the usual large radial engines or jet turbines. The combination of engine and the Hamilton Standard propeller offered a much more reliable and fuel efficient aircraft that could travel at 375 mph for 2000 miles at an altitude of 20,000 – 25,000 feet. When production ended in 1961 there had been 170 Electras completed.

In October 1958 Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) ordered 2 Lockheed L-188 Electras. One of these aircraft was VH-TLA c/n 1061 named “John Eyre”. VH-TLA first flew on May 19, 1959 and was delivered to the airline at Melbourne on June 24, 1959. On July 8, 1959 the aircraft performed its inaugural commercial flight between Melbourne and Sydney. VH-TLA made its final commercial flight with TAA from Canberra to Sydney on April 30, 1971. Later that day the aircraft was ferried to Brisbane and put in storage. The L-188 was sold to Concare Aircraft Leasing on March 12, 1972 and registered as N188LA. The Electra changed hands a few more times before being scrapped in late 1975 early 1976.
