Key Characteristics: The Stretch

1. Fuselage and Capacity:

• Length: The MAX 9 is approximately 2.7 meters (about 9 feet) longer than the MAX 8.
• Seating: This extra length allows for more rows of seats. In a standard two-class airline configuration (business and economy), it typically seats between 178 and 193 passengers.
• Max Capacity: In a high-density, all-economy configuration, certified to use extra emergency exits, it can accommodate up to 220 passengers.

2. The Range Trade-Off:

• The MAX 9 uses the exact same engines (CFM LEAP-1B) and has the same wing as the smaller MAX 8.
• Because the MAX 9 is heavier (due to the longer fuselage and more passengers/cargo), it burns fuel slightly faster.
• Consequently, its range is slightly shorter than the MAX 8, at approximately 3,300 nautical miles (6,110 km).

3. The Auxiliary Fuel Tank:

• To ensure the MAX 9 can still fly transcontinental routes (like New York to Los Angeles) fully loaded, it is often equipped with an auxiliary fuel tank located in the rear cargo hold. This was also a feature of its predecessor, the 737-900ER.
