In 1970, Interflug entered the jet age on long-haul flights. With the introduction of the four-engine IL-62, it was now possible to fly directly to more distant destinations such as Cuba or Vietnam, which the IL-18, until then the flagship of the airline, could not reach. At the end of the 1980s, no fewer than 13 examples were in use.
