In February 2009 Lufthansa Italia established flight operations only to European capitals to start with – Germany deliberately exempt. To this end, an initial pair of former German Wings Airbus A319s were converted and presented to the Italian public featuring the original Lufthansa livery and equipment, plus the discreet gray addition of "Italia". The original of this model is D-AKNJ with the name of the city "Milano". Meanwhile, Lufthansa Italia has also taken up domestic air traffic and plans long-haul routes from Milan-Malpensa.
