This TR-1, a version of the U-2 for tactical rather than strategic reconnaissance, was deployed with other elements of the 17th Reconnaissance Squadron as part of Operation Desert Storm from its then operating base at Alconbury in England to Saudi Arabia. Apparently fans of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip popular in the 1980s and 1990s, the pilot and crew chalked Calvin on the right side of the tailplane with a camera.
