Originally built for the US Air Force in 1944, the aircraft first hit Australian soil in 1949 when it was sold to Qantas Empire Airways. In 1961 it was re-registered with the identifier VH-EDB and was given the baptismal name "Norfolk Trader". This DC-4 was mainly used on routes from mainland Australia to Norfolk Island, a small group of islands around 1,400 km east of the Australian coast, until it was finally sold in 1977.
