The history of the "Europa Jet", as Lufthansa called the Boeing 727, began as early as 1964 with the delivery of the original short version of the three-jet aircraft. In 1971, 50 years ago, the “Karlsruhe” was the first stretched 727-200 to be delivered. No fewer than 33 examples of this striking aviation classic were to follow and be used reliably on European routes until 1993.
